Post-rock
Post-rock is a music genre characterized by nontraditional use of instruments and high musical density. Although firmly rooted in the indie scene, post-rock's elusive and complex style bears little resemblance musically to that of indie rock. However, as post-rock music is often recorded on independent labels, indie and post-rock often share the same level of obscurity.

The term was coined by Simon Reynolds in a review of Bark Psychosis' album Hex, published in the March 1994 issue of Mojo magazine. Reynolds expanded upon the idea later, most notably in an article found in the May 1994 of The Wire. He used the term to describe a sort of music "using rock instrumentation for non-rock purposes, using guitars as facilitators of timbres and textures rather than riffs and power chords."

Originally used to describe the music of such bands as Cul-de-Sac, Stereolab, Laika, Disco Inferno, Moonshake, Seefeel, Bark Psychosis and Pram, it spread out to be frequently used for all sorts of jazz- and Krautrock-influenced, instrumental, electronica-added music made after 1994. Bands from the early 1990s such as Slint, or earlier, such as Talk Talk were influential on this genre.

As with many musical genres, the term is arguably inadequate: it is used for the music of Tortoise as well as that of Mogwai, two bands who have very little in common besides the fact that their music is largely instrumental.

Mice Parade
The experimental electronica/post-rock of New York's Mice Parade, aka Adam Pierce, blends live instrumentation, layers of overdubs, and intricate percussion into a distinctive, playful sound. (from All Music: Mice Parade).

His intriguing sound gets poppier with the later albums but never forget the intelligent approach full with feeling. Even Múm's Kristin Anna Valtisdottir lends her airy vocals to 4 songs on the last two albums. With the beautiful duet: Night Wave as the most powerful example.

Nick Drake
Nick Drake (1948–1974) was an English folk singer/songwriter and musician best known for his acoustic, autumnal songs. His primary instrument was the guitar, but he was also proficient at piano, clarinet, and saxophone. Between 1969 and 1972, Drake recorded three albums, which though they failed to find a wide audience during his lifetime, have steadily grown in stature since, to the extent that he is now widely considered to be one of the most influential acoustic songwriters of the last 40 years.

Drake signed to Island Records when he was 20 years old, releasing his debut album Five Leaves Left in 1969. However, none of his albums sold more than 5,000 copies at the time, and his reluctance to perform live or to be interviewed were contributors to his lack of commercial success.

Drake battled with depression, insomnia and acute shyness throughout his life, and the topics would often appear as the subject of his lyrics. Upon completion of his third album, 1972's Pink Moon, he drew back from both live performance and recording, retreating to his parents' home in rural Warwickshire. On November 25, 1974, Nick Drake died from an overdose of antidepressants, at the age of 26.

Jim Noir
Jim Noir is a singer-songwriter from Manchester, England. Most reknowned for "Eanie Meany", a song used by Adidas in their 2006 World Cup advertising, although personally I think "In The Key of C" is a far superior effort. Both songs feature on the "Tower of Love" album.

I had a bit of a dilemma trying to figure out what genre to put on this stuff in iTunes, as "Indie Pop" is a very nebulous term (my dilemma is perfectly summarized by this wikipedia article).

Manu Chao
Manu Chao is a citizen of the world, ex-vocalist of Mano Negra. Clandestino provides an eclectic multi-lingual critique of the state of the world, treating social injustices, immigration, environmental issues. Musically influenced by latin american sounds, reusing similar samples and lyrics in different songs, the album as a whole hangs together almost perfectly.

Todo es mentira en este mundo. Todo es mentira la verdad. Todo es mentira yo me digo, todo es mentira porque sera. Arriba la luna o-eh-ahh. Thanks Manu.

Smoke City
Flying Away is the name of the album, Underwater Love is cute, but there are many other good songs on there... Numbers is good, but strange, and Mr. Gorgeous I like very much.

Smoke City
Smoke City dig. The female vocalist is Nina Miranda. The track 'Underwater Love' springs to mind as one of their more famous ones, which was used in the levis advert a few years ago. What's the name of the album you're listening too? What are your faves?
